well you can check craigslist for PS3's and if they says JB your gonna pay but if they say "been sitting my kids room for years" or things like that you can probably get one on the cheap and it just needs to be on firmware 3.55 or lower.

another way is to make friends with someone at a location like pawn or used systems where people trade them in or sell them since they are going to check them to make sure they work anyway. only takes a sec for them to look at firmware.

MAME arcade is on my winter projects and using THIS as guide so looks like we are at opposite situations

I was planning to build but decided to buy due to the risk of electrocution, coupled with the possibility of a 1/2 built project sitting around for 5 years

Funny thing is that, notwithstanding the fact that I decided to buy rather than build, I STILL managed to electrocute myself !!! I hated the volume level of the fans in the cabinet, so with about half a dozen beers in me one night I opened it up and started tinkering around with the fan voltage. 240 volts later and a damaged wall caused by my flying torso... I decided to reconnect things and leave the fans be.

ooh i have to laugh! thats a good story and beer can lead to fixing things and often not for the best. you should be able though to just get new ultra-quite fans on amazon that are the exact size you have and replace them easily. something like this but in your size.

See that's what is interesting. The fans inside the cabinet are not PC fans, they are some sort other variant. Basically, the PC inside the cab is a self-contained unit in a case with it's own fans, and the noisy ones are attached to a power-thing (!) inside the cabinet itself, powered by mains and a switch on the cab. If they were normal PC case fans I would have been golden...5 min job.
